The Town of Chilmark is sad to announce the passing of former Selectman Edward E. Mayhew Jr. today.  He served from 1971 to 1974.

On Tuesday February 23, 1971 the polls were opened between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM.  Ted defeated a sitting Selectman and at 8:15 PM the Annual Town Meeting was opened by Acting Moderator Joseph Kraetzer and "Ted" started his service.  In May Ted participated in the 99 year lease of the Lucinda Vincent Memorial Beach and the protection of Menemsha waters from pollution.

In addition to the many duties of a Selectman, the Select Board was also acting as the Board of Assessors, and the Board of Health.  He still had time to help adopt local zoning for Chilmark to protect the rural character of the town, create the Council On Aging, designate Basin Road, North Road, Middle Road, Tea Lane, Meeting House Road, Tabor House Road, Menemsha Cross Road, and Squibnocket Road as Scenic roads, and the creation of the Executive Secretary position at Town Hall.

A grave side service is scheduled for Sunday July 2, 11 AM at Abel's Hill.  Military Honors will be rendered.  A reception will follow the services at the Chilmark Community Center 522 South Road.
