Important Cyanobacteria Advisory & Watch Status Update for Chilmark Pond

Important Notice

UPDATED AUGUST 16, 2023: Cyanobacteria sampling collected in Chilmark Pond on 08/16/23 indicates that the cyanobacteria bloom from the Middle Part of the pond has spread through Doctor`s Creek and the Able`s Hill Crossing. The harmful Algal Bloom “Advisory” is now in place in the middle pond,  Doctor’s Creek and Able`s Hill Crossing. The majority of lower pond remains in a cyanobacteria ALERT aside from the SW corner, nearest Abel's Hill, which is in WATCH status. The MV CYANO page is now updated to reflect the presence of a bloom: https://greatpondfoundation.org/mvcyano/

As a reminder, the Island Boards of Health recommend that humans and pets stay out of blooming waters because of the potential negative impacts of cyanotoxins, if present. The Chilmark Board of Health highly recommends no shellfishing until the bloom has cleared. Please see the attached signs for full recommendations.
