Important Cyanobacteria Advisory for Squibnocket Pond

Important Notice

UPDATE: August 22, 2023

Cyanobacteria sampling, collected on 08/21/23,  continues to show that a cyanobacteria bloom is still present in Squibnocket Pond.

August 15, 2023:

Cyanobacteria sampling, collected in Squibnocket Pond on 08/14/23, indicates that there is a cyanobacteria bloom in Squibnocket. Samples for cyanotoxin analysis and scope identification are pending. 

The MV CYANO page is now updated to reflect the presence of a bloom: https://greatpondfoundation.org/mvcyano/  and a physical red ADVISORY sign will be posted near Squibnocket Pond shortly. 

As a reminder, the Island Boards of Health recommend that humans and pets stay out of blooming waters because of the potential negative impacts of cyanotoxins, if present. Please see the attached sign for full recommendations. 

The Chilmark Board of Health highly recommends no shellfishing until the bloom has cleared.
