Chilmark Land & Homeowners:
YOU CAN HELP with affordable and community housing
Over the past several decades, well-intentioned land use restrictions, scarcity of land, seasonal demand for existing housing and a lack of affordable housing on Martha’s Vineyard have all combined to create our current housing crisis.
Right now, there are over 700 working island families and individuals without stable year-round housing. We are losing families and our workforce due to the lack of affordable homes and year-round rental units.
This crisis has a profound effect on the entire Vineyard community,
including your friends and neighbors in Chilmark.
OPTIONS FOR CREATING AFFORDABLE HOMES:
ACCESSORY APARTMENT Convert an existing structure (barn, garage, other) for year-round affordable rental or build an accessory apartment. | DONATION of LAND Land donations to the Town of Chilmark to be utilized as affordable housing sites. Almost any size will do! | HOMESITE & YOUTH LOTS Homeowners may provide/sell a 1-acre buildable lot to an eligible person of their choice. | CASH DONATION Make a tax-deductible donation to the Town of Chilmark Molly Flender Municipal Housing Trust. | SUBSIDIZED RENTAL Rent your dwelling (house or guest-house) year-round. Affordable rentals can be subsidized by the Town. |
