Assessors
About Us
The Board of Assessors in each city and town in the Commonwealth is required by Massachusetts law to list and value all real and personal property. Valuation is subject to “ad valorem” taxation on an assessment roll each year which means that all property should be taxed “according to value. In Massachusetts, assessed values are based on “full and fair cash value” or 100% of the fair market value.
Our office is also a data center for maps, ownership and deed information, property descriptions and property sales.
Assessors have the responsibility for the Motor Vehicle Excise tax bills that are originated by the State Registry of Motor Vehicles. The Registry updates bills to reflect recent changes and then pass the bills on to the Town of distribution.
In addition, this office originates boat excise bills for people who have boats principally situated in Chilmark from information furnished by the Department of Environmental Police and the Chilmark Harbor Master.
