Black Mountain Poets

Wednesday, January 19, 4:00 PM. The Black Mountain Poets with Poet Laureate Jill Jupen (rescheduled.).

Black Mountain College sprung up in the 1930s in the Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, born in a time of crisis. The Nazis had shut down the Bauhaus, and its artists found refuge at Black Mountain. The post-war poetry of the Black Mountain school was associated with the three poets who led its mission: Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, and Robert Duncan, who promoted a nontraditional poetics described by Olson as “projective verse.” Jill Jupen, poet laureate of Martha’s Vineyard, will talk about the historical circumstances that led to their manifesto, and of the work of the three poets who began the movement.

Jill Jupen is the Poet Laureate of Martha's Vineyard, and has lived on the island for 21 years. She was born and raised in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont where she was a psychiatric nurse. Her chapbook "The Space Between" was published by Plan B Press in 2018. She lives on the island with her husband, three Jack Russells, and a whole lot of books.
