1. Who may use the library?
The basic services at the library are free to all Residents of Massachusetts, and taxpayers in Chilmark. Others may obtain a card for a fee of $1.00 per year. Children may get a card at age 8. Adult cards are issued for ages 14 and up.
2. How many items may be checked out per card?
Fifteen items may be checked out per card at any given time, with three videos or DVDs per adult card. Children with children’s cards may not check out videos or DVDs.
3. What are overdue fines for materials? Are there renewals?
Books are 5 cents a day when overdue, DVDs and videos are $1 per item per calendar day. There are no fines for children ages 8-14, using a children’s card. Materials may be renewed in person or by phone at all times. Renewals made before closing of the due date will not incur fines.
4. Does the library offer technology services to the public?
There are four public access terminals available for use by registered adult card holders at the library, and two for youth with cards. Basic Internet, word processing, and informational databases are available. Please contact us for specific policies and rules about Internet and word-processing use. Note that one may not store data or use diskettes or CDs in our computers. There is a wireless router available for people with laptops and PDA's.
There is a copier and a fax machine available for public use. Copies are 20 cents per page. Faxes cost $1.00 nationally and $5.00 internationally to send, and 50 cents to receive (all fees are per page).
4. Does the library offer meeting room space?
The library has a large meeting room, which seats 60 and a small conference room, which seats 8. The meetings are available for use by non-profit organizations, who charge no fees. There is audio/visual equipment available for use, with staff assistance. Users need to have a Chilmark resident sponsor, and fill out a form. Contact us for more information.
5. What programs does the library offer?
There are programs year-round for both adults and children.
For youth, there is Saturday Stories at 10:30 a.m. for about an hour. In July and August there is a live storyteller. September through June there are stories with music. Sandpipers toddler time for children ages 0-3 each Tuesday 10:30-11:00 a.m. During the school year, we have the after-school crafts program for grade-schoolers on Wednesdays from 3-4 p.m. The teen/young adult group meets from 5-6 p.m. on the last Wednesday of each month.
For adults, the book groups are on hiatus.
Poetry readings by local poets and the film-maker forum for local film-makers meet occasionally. Call the library for specific dates. People are welcome to bring their works or just observe.
The Investment Club meets on the Third Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. Visitors are welcome.
The evening lecture series is sponsored by the Friends of the Chilmark Library, and meets between one and six times on Wednesday and Thursday evenings each month. These programs include author talks, informative and entertaining lectures, slide shows, and the chef series.
Is there a Friends of the Library group?
Yes, the Friends Group is a 501C-3 non-profit organization. It welcomes questions and gifts directed to P.O. Box 434, Chilmark MA 02535. Gifts are tax-deductible within applicable laws.
